Dr. Kim is Associate Professor in Engineering Management at UTC. He received his Ph.D. in industrial engineering from Texas A&M University in 2009. He is Project Management Professional (PMP), certified Lean Six Sigma Green Belt, and Associate Certified Analytics Professional (aCAP). Before UTC, he worked for Engineering, Science, and Project Management Department at the University of Alaska Anchorage and served as the Program Chair of Engineering and Science Management.
 
His research areas include decision and risk analysis for energy technologies and oil & gas exploration, emergency management in the face of natural disasters, characterizing hidden risks, data analytics application for decision making, technology forecast using TRIZ method, creative problem solving methods for process improvement and new product development, and sports analytics.
 
He worked for Samsung to find solutions to their display product problems using TRIZ methods, developed training programs for school teachers and oil & gas employees, and taught engineers, project management practitioners, quality management practitioners, and other diverse audiences, aside from teaching at the universities. One of his research and teaching interests is:
  • Creative problem solving methods for challenging innovation problems
  • How to resolve conflicting requirements, how to overcome dilemma in operational or technical system, how to forecast the direction of technology development in the current market
  • Target audiences
    • Product or process designers who want to meet voice of customer and voice of business without compromising them
    • Startup companies who wants to differentiate themselves from competitors
    • Those who have a unique technology or idea but need to find a way to make it feasible and viable
